How-to
How to edit a Word document on your phone, without an app
The short answer
Open Wrdio in your phone's browser, press Choose file and pick the .docx, then press Edit. When you finish, tap File and choose Share as DOCX. It works on Android and iPhone browsers, with no app and no account.
A document arrives while you are out. You need to fix a date, add a line, or sign it, and the nearest computer is a bus ride away. Editing a Word file on a phone is entirely possible; it is just not obvious how to start when the official app wants you to sign in or pay.
Here is a way that works in the browser you already have. We will be honest about where a phone is awkward, because it is.
Edit a .docx on your phone, step by step
- Open Wrdio in your phone's browser: Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge all work.
- Choose the file. Press Choose file and pick your .docx from your downloads, your files or an email attachment you have saved.
- Press Edit. The editor downloads about 9 MB the first time, so do this on Wi-Fi if you can. A progress bar tells you how far along it is.
- Edit. Tap the page to place the cursor. Drag one finger to scroll. Press and hold on a word to select it, and tap elsewhere to clear the selection. The toolbar row scrolls sideways for more tools.
- Save a copy. Tap File, then Share as DOCX or Share as PDF. The file lands in your Downloads.
Starting fresh? On the home page, press New document. The File menu also offers a blank page, a letter, a resume and a report.
What is different on a phone
- Text reflows to fit the screen. On a phone the page is shown as one continuous column rather than tiny printed pages. Your saved file still has normal pages. If you want to see the real page edges, turn on Page view in the File menu.
- A shorter toolbar. Bold, italic, underline, font and size, colours, alignment and lists are in one row. Swipe it sideways for more.
- Jump around fast. The pill at the bottom, labelled Jump, takes you to the top or the end of the document.
- Dark mode. The editor follows your phone's setting, and the File menu has a Theme row if you want to change it.
A fair warning. The phone editor is new and we are still polishing it. For a quick fix, a few paragraphs or a signature, it does the job. For a long document, a computer is easier on your thumbs. If something misbehaves in your browser, the contact page is where to tell us.
When the file will not open
- Check the ending. The file must end in .docx. Older .doc files and password-protected files will not open here.
- Download it again. If it came as an email attachment, a half-finished download can look like a file but fail to open.
- Try another browser. If one browser struggles, try another. Updating the browser helps too.
- Free up space. A phone that is almost full can fail to load a large editor. Close other tabs and apps.
- On a Chromebook, use the browser, open the file from your Downloads folder with the Choose file button, and the same steps apply.
Tips for typing on a small screen
- Turn the phone sideways. You get a wider page and a bigger keyboard row.
- Make the big changes first: the wording. Fix the formatting afterwards, when you can see more.
- Save a copy now and then. Your edits live in the browser tab until you save, and closing the tab loses them. Wrdio asks before you leave if you have unsaved changes, but some phone browsers skip that warning.
- Need to sign it? See how to sign a Word document.
Questions people ask
Can I edit a Word document on my phone for free?
Yes. In a phone browser, Wrdio lets you open a .docx, edit it and save a copy as DOCX or PDF, with no account and no app.
Why can't I edit Word documents in the Word app on my phone?
Official mobile apps can limit editing, ask you to sign in, or ask for a subscription depending on the device. Check the app's current terms. A browser tool is an alternative when you only need a quick edit.
Does editing on a phone use a lot of data?
The editor is about 9 MB the first time you press Edit, and your browser keeps it afterwards. If you are on mobile data, press Edit on Wi-Fi once.
Where does the saved file go on my phone?
Your browser saves it to Downloads, like any other download. On an iPhone you can find it in the Files app, and on Android in the Downloads folder.
